Process to finalise results of City’s property auction under way

Thank you to all bidders who participated in the City of Cape Town’s online property auction held on Thursday 29 June 2023. Due process is currently being followed so the results of the auction can be finalised. 

This auction was an opportunity for the public to purchase City-owned land that is not required for municipal purposes, via a mandated competitive bidding process.

All bids received are subject to a 15-day business day acceptance period following the decision of the Immovable Property Adjudication Committee. This means the results of the auction will be confirmed at a later stage once due legislative processes have been concluded.

32 properties were on sale via auction. They varied in size and zoning (including Community, Residential, Business Residential). This supports the City's objectives to create integrated social, residential and economic developments across the city.

There was also a Green Point lease opportunity available.

'This auction was a resounding success because of the many bids received for properties for commercial and social and residential development opportunities including the Green Point lease. It was incredibly heartening watching the live-streamed auction to see such strong support for the City of Cape Town's efforts to bring land opportunities and better services and amenities to the people of Cape Town by unlocking the potential of land through disposals in various areas including Durbanville, Gardens, Newlands, Goodwood, Mitchells Plain, Khayelitsha, Grassy Park, Muizenberg and more.

'The revenue generated from these properties will be used for service delivery throughout the city,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, Alderman James Vos.

Releasing land to maximise economic and social value

'The disposal of these carefully considered properties augments the City's commitment to driving accelerated inclusive economic growth and prioritising the development of underused land parcels via a competitive auction process that allows all interested parties to bid equitably for such opportunities.

'These sites that went for auction must not be confused with the land parcels that the City is making available for affordable housing developments. The land parcels that the City designates for human settlement purposes are processed in terms of feasibility and packaging. I am working closely with the Human Settlements Department and Property Management Department to ensure that these sites are ready for disposal and development for the various types of housing schemes the City requires.

'When it comes to the public auctions, we are now able to regularly schedule the properties not required for municipal purposes and therefore better serve the private sector for home building and or development opportunities. Enabling private ownership and economic opportunities remains a priority for the City, while simultaneously extracting the best value and being caring, consistent and confident of our processes,' said Alderman Vos.
